The myth is easy to believe, pervasive, convincing (at first), and widely believed.  The myth is bizarrely self-perpetuating.  The myth remains.

Keep in mind, it is a myth.  So, it is not true.

According to the myth, you don’t want to retain  a professional photographer at major life events, like weddings, large reunions, and others.  The myth holds that: 

1. Mom’s college roommate has a brand new Sony SLR that cost $7000 and is used by elite  fine art photographers in New York City (which has to be said in a northern Alabama drawl).  So, employing a professional wedding photographer is redundant, since surely images of an immense grade will be captured, almost without intent; or

2. Photographers earn far too much in exchange for the work that can be put forth.  They hang around at a wedding, act silly, play with their flash equipment, and still maintain $140 an hour?  The photos that are composed - unintentionally - then accidentally fall in to a computer, are color-corrected, the JPG is fixed, cropped appropriately, ad infinitum.  

There are more pieces to the lie.  You have heard it from your cousin, their distant friend, and that kid at the electronics store behind the counter.  In your innermost place, though, you know it to be patently not true.  (You probably will not convince them if you choose to engage the enemy, nonetheless.  Those who hold this belief do so forgetting all hesitation.) 

Fortunately, a simple counter argument is this: 

Is this event important to you?  Do you think it is important to remember this even?  Will hiring a profession photographer - an artist - going to help you in you’re your memory of this event?

As you can see, you will no doubt answer all three of these questions in the positive.  So, employing an artist like a wedding photographer will - at the end of the day - be a perfectly reasonable expenditure, certainly given the overall cost of a major event.  The crucial element is to find a great resource to find your photographer, like Top 5 Wedding Photographers, who can capture the memories for a reasonable cost.
